The Chyulu Hills, called The Green Hills of Africa by Ernest Hemmingway, provide the setting for the 1,036km2 group ranch on which Campi ya Kanzi is situated. The diverse beauty Hemmingway loved is here, from savannah grasslands to green river woodlands, from cool mountain forests to the volcanic hills themselves.
Campi ya Kanzi, Camp of the Hidden Treasure, is a community project with the local Maasai. The first camp to be awarded the Ecotourism Kenya’s gold award, this camp was built entirely of local materials, without felling any trees, and has instigated numerous recycling and composting programmes. Its Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust works to preserve the culture and wildlife of the Maasai with conservation, education and health projects.
The 6 luxury tented cottages and the Hemingway and Simba suites, all set on wooden platforms with thatched roofs and large en-suite bathrooms, have solar hot water and eco-friendly flush toilets. Kanzi House, a luxurious private experience, has 3 double and 2 twin rooms, a 18m swimming pool, a Jacuzzi and a swimming pool cottage. Tembo House, constructed of local materials such as lava and grass, is an open plan dining and living room serving Italian cuisine with a panoramic view of Mt Kilimanjaro and the Tsavo Hills.
