About NMK Lake Turkana Koobi Fora Bandas

The Koobi Fora Museum offers an introduction into the many archaeological discoveries made in this region and the research that is being done here. Lake Turkana Koobi Fora Bandas are located near the museum. They are owned and operated by National Museums of Kenya, NMK. There are 3 bandas, each with twin beds, bed linen, towels and mosquito nets. There are communal, external bathroom facilities, a communal kitchen and a dining banda. Visitors should bring all their food and drinks. A resident caretaker and 4 other staff can assist with cooking and share information about the region.

Sibiloi National Park is best known for the fossil beds and museum. Other sites of interest include the Jarigole Pillor site, a pre-Iron Age burial complex marked by pillars of basalt, and Sibiloi Fossil Forest, a fossilised forest buried by volcanic eruption. Walks in the area include the Hasuma Forest Bird Walk on the river Alia, the Koobi Fora Spit Walk, a hike with plentiful birdlife and crocodiles, and the Fish Nesting Walking Tour, which provides an introduction to the geology of the area and shows some of the sites where Maeve and Richard Leakey found hominid fossils. The Karari Archaeological Sites are located 2 hours north of the camp, and have findings between 1.9 and 1.5 million years old.
