About Tsavo Mashariki
Mashariki, meaning east, is an apt description of this camp which looks east into the sunrise, and offers views across Tsavo East National Park. The camp is operated by the Italian-based Ora Hotel Chain.
There are 3 double tents, 2 triple tents, 1 rock cottage sleeping 4 pax and 1 rock cottage sleeping 5 pax. All rooms are en-suite, have 24-hour electricity and a veranda with a view. Lunch is an international buffet; dinner combines Italian and Swahili dishes. Swahili dishes include beans and coconut soup, chicken curry, coconut rice and nyama choma grilled meats. Mashariki Camp offers a photography course, run by a selection of professional photographers who specialise in bush photography. Jeeps or minivans with drivers can be rented, or guests can drive their own vehicles. Game drives can be done in Tsavo East National Park, with its rolling scrub-covered hills and large herds of elephants, as well as in nearby Tsavo West National Park. Caving in the Lava Flows of Shetani and Chaimu and boat rides on Lake Chala and Lake Jipe are also on offer. A trip to Tsavo Mashariki can be combined with a visit to the coast; the camp is affiliated to Kivulini Beach near Malindi and Twiga Hotel in Watamu.
