With a name that means heaven in Swahili, Peponi Hotel is a beachfront paradise. The hotel opened in 1967 and has remained in the hands of the same family ever since.
There are 24 en-suite rooms, made up of 14 standard and 10 superior. Each room is individually designed and adorned with traditional artefacts. All rooms are sea facing with private balcony. Each is equipped with safe, fan, mosquito net and solar heated water. The restaurant, with seafront terrace and bar, has a selection of sushi, Swahili dishes, Italian cuisine, seafood and steaks. The bar is fully stocked with soft drinks, beers, wines, spirits and cocktails. There is a library, with books in several languages.
A local masseuse provides massage, reflexology and body scrub. The freeform swimming pool curves around ancient baobabs and overlooks the beach. The lush garden is dotted with traditional gourds and ornaments. Peponi Hotel minimises its environmental impact by disposing of waste responsibly.
Activities include deep sea fishing, water-skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkelling and boat trips. The Turtle Trust is a community project, initiated by Peponi Hotel, that protects turtles and pays fishermen to release them. The hotel also works with Lamu Marine Conservation Trust, LamCot, to protect fish and coral.
