The Ark, shaped like a ship with wood-panelled alleys and port holes, overlooks a waterhole in the Aberdare National Park. Passengers board the Ark on a wooden gang plank and are given a ‘sailing certificate’ when they leave.
The Ark operates with the Aberdare Country Club. Guests stay at the Country Club for a night, or just stop for lunch, and are transferred to the Ark at 2.30pm or at 5.30pm.
There are 63 en-suite rooms, made up of 7 singles, 39 twins, 9 triples and 8 doubles with queen beds. Each of the 4 floors has a deck that overlooks the waterhole, some enclosed in glass and others open. On the ground floor, a hide with open viewing holes is tucked into the base of the boat. Game viewing is good, with buffalo and elephant seen almost every night. Giant forest hog, bongo and suni are among the rare mammal species spotted here, while Hertlobs turaco, red-fronted parrot and Egyptian geese are among the rare bird species. The Ark operates a buzzer system so that even when sleeping guests are alerted to action at the waterhole – 1 buzz for an elephant, 2 for a rhino, 3 for a leopard and 4 for any rare species.
