Borana, on the edge of the Samangua Valley, has panoramic views of Mt Kenya, across the Lewa Plains to the Ngare Ndare Forest. Built in 1992 by local artisans using only local building materials, the lodge is comfortable, luxurious and totally in keeping with its surroundings. Both the lodge and a game blind overlook a dam which attracts wildlife to the area.
Borana has 4 large double cottages and 4 large twin cottages. Each cottage is totally secluded from its neighbour and has its own special view. Meals are served in a central dining area with large fireplaces, decorated with local artists’ and sculptors’ work.
Laragai House, the private house of George and Lucilla Stephenson, is available for up to 10 guests when they are not in residence.
A stay at Borana is a unique opportunity for total immersion in the life of a working ranch where environmental and ecological considerations rank alongside responsibility to neighbouring communities. Community projects include a mobile clinic, supporting 3 women’s groups, supporting 5 primary schools and working with the community on a forestry project. Borana is closed during the month of November.
