On the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, El Karama Eco Lodge looks out on a riverside saltlick that attracts plentiful game. The lodge, which has been in the hands of the Grant family since the 1970s, is in 15,000 acres of private land. It was refurbished in 2010.
There are 4 en-suite bandas, made from stone, thatch and canvas, each with private veranda. There is 1 rondavel with external bathroom and 1 cottage with en-suite bathroom. Both these are suitable for families. The campsite has kitchen and bathroom facilities. The rooms are unique in design, and filled with quirky artwork such as paintings of El Karama’s landscape, plaster casts of animal tracks and Stone Age hand axes found locally. The central mess area has an open fireplace, open plan dining room, bar and reading area. Guests can choose either full board or self-catering. Activities include accompanied self-drive game drives, game walks, bird walks, picnics and sundowners. Guests are also welcome to visit the ranch, see the Saihiwal cattle and attend milking, dipping and inspections. Other activities available for a surcharge include fishing for barbel and catfish, horse riding, bush meals and children’s tracking adventures. El Karma Eco Lodge is committed to the preservation of wildlife habitats; a substantial portion of profit is consigned to conservation work.
