On a rocky outcrop on the northeastern edge of the 16,000-acre Il Ngwesi Group Ranch, Il Ngwesi has panoramic views across northern Kenya. The lodge is managed by the Il Ngwesi Group Ranch Maasai community, and was constructed entirely from local materials.
There are 6 en-suite bandas, made up of 3 triples, 1 honeymoon suite and 2 starbeds, with raised platforms onto which beds can be rolled for a night under the stars. All bandas are open plan with sitting areas and thatched roofs. Water is heated by solar power. The timber floor of the sitting and dining area flows around tree trunks. The lodge is adorned with rustic furniture made by local Maasai and bright local fabrics. There is a swimming pool with poolside lounge.
Activities include game drives, game walks and cultural visits to local Maasai villages. Bush breakfasts, sundowners and dinners can be arranged. Il Ngwesi is affiliated to Walking Wild; camel treks should be booked in advance. Visits to Omni, the hand-reared orphan black rhino, are recommended. Profit from the lodge supports the local community and its schools, cattle dips and water supplies. Il Ngwesi received the UNDP 2002 Equator Initiative Award and was given a bronze award by the Ecotourism Society of Kenya.
