Set in lush tropical gardens, Fatuma’s Tower is a tranquil retreat. It is named after Fatuma Abu Bakar, a Swahili noblewoman who lived here attended by 5 female slaves during the 19th century. After her death and the abolition of slavery, the house fell into ruins. A hundred years later, this sanctuary was carefully restored and opened as a hotel in 2000. There are 10 en-suite rooms in 3 unique houses. The Tower has 5 double rooms, a yoga hall and library. The Sandcastle has a ground floor family apartment with 3 double rooms. The Garden Cottage has 2 double rooms. Sandcastle and Garden can be taken as private houses if required. The rooms recreate the atmosphere of a Swahili house, are furnished with local antiques and fabrics, and equipped with solar heated water, fan and mosquito net. Each house is staffed by a chef who specialises in Italian and Swahili cuisine. Meals are served on the balconies or in the lamp-lit gardens. There is also a plunge pool and sunbathing terrace. Beer and wine are served.
Yoga sessions take place daily at 5pm. A local masseuse offers massage, reflexology, manicure and pedicure. Boat trips and other excursions can be arranged.
