Set in a private concession southeast of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Black Leopard Retreat offers an exclusive game viewing experience. Over 100 species of mammals and over 400 species of birds have been recorded here, many only a short distance from the camp. The camp was previously called Muthaiga Safari Camp, and before that was called Impiripiri Camp. The 7 en-suite tents are decorated in the rich colours of Africa and furnished with large double beds, hand-woven rugs, safari chests and writing desks. Each has a wooden veranda overlooking the savannah. The 2 villas, served by a private butler, have 2 en-suite bedrooms and a large living room adorned with local fabrics and craftwork. Their large wooden decks overlook lush woodland. The living and dining tent, elegantly furnished with traditional safari equipment and Swahili ornaments, opens onto savannah and a waterhole often visited by wildlife. This eco-friendly camp uses solar and wind energy and has initiated many wildlife and community preservation projects.
The camp is built on land leased from the Maasai and its local staff are happy to introduce guests to their culture and traditions. Guests are welcome to visit local villages and schools, and to attend the weekly Maasai market. As well as game drives and game walks, activities include night drives, bush meals and sundowners at stunning viewpoints.
