About Richards Camp

Originally built as the Roberts’ home while they were carrying out conservation work in the greater Maasai Mara region, Richard’s Camp is an exclusive tented camp. A small forest fringes the camp, ensuring that elephant and plains game are regular visitors to the camp’s perimeter, and birdlife is plentiful. There are 6 en-suite tents, with 24-hour solar lighting, furnished in the style of traditional safaris and adorned with local fabrics. These can be doubles or twins as requested, and an extra bed can be added for a child. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at a long table either in the mess tent or under the stars. The camp also boasts a Victorian bath tucked away in the forest where guests can soak in comfort surrounded by flickering candles and the sounds of the bush.

Located to the northwest of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the camp is in a conservation area that is owned and managed by the Maasai people under the name of The Ol Chorro Oirouwa Wildlife Management and Conservation Association. Richard Roberts and his family continue to be very active in on-going Mara conservation projects as well as spearheading initiatives in other parts of Kenya. Activities include day and night game drives, game walks, cultural visits to local Maasai villages, bush breakfasts and sundowners. Scenic flights can be arranged for a surcharge.

The camp is closed in May and November.

Richard’s Private Camp is on the banks of the Njageteck River just below Klipspringer Gorge and next to Ngoyanai Springs. This permanent water around the camp ensures that there is plenty of game, including a pride of lions often seen on the hill in front of the camp. The 5 custom-designed tents have outdoor en-suite bathrooms. The camp is always booked on a fully exclusive basis and groups are never mixed.
