About Sweetwaters Serena Tented Camp

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is the only place in Kenya to see this endangered and highly intelligent species. The sanctuary opened in 1993 as refuge for orphaned and abused chimpanzees from west and central Africa; the first 3 arrived that year from Bujumbura, evacuated from Burundi at the outbreak of civil war. Currently the sanctuary is home to 43 chimpanzees.

Sweetwaters Serena Tented Camp is set around a game-rich waterhole in Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The 39 en-suite tents are made up of 13 doubles and 26 twins. Each tent has a thatched roof and a balcony overlooking the waterhole.

Built in the 1970s, the main building was the home of the ranch manager. Now Rhino Restaurant serves alfresco and table d’hote food. The Waterhole Bar has an uninterrupted view of the waterhole. And the Khashoggi Bar and Lounge provides a place to relax. There is also a swimming pool, business centre and spa.

As well as day and night game drives, activities include nature walks with a resident naturalist, bird watching, horse riding, camel trekking and lion tracking. Visits to Morani Information Centre and the rhino holding pens are also available. Sweetwaters Tented Camp has a prestigious gold award from Ecotourism Kenya.
