About Solio Lodge

Solio combines a working ranch with a wildlife sanctuary that provides refuge for wildlife that would otherwise be deprived of suitable habitat. Solio Ranch was established in 1970, and has become recognised as a successful rhino breeding ground. It has translocated 100 black rhino and 60 white rhino to destinations around Kenya.

Solio Lodge was built using local materials. There are 6 en-suite cottages, each with private deck, fireplace and large plate glass windows to maximise the view. The décor combines African culture with modern elegance. All rooms have WiFi, hairdryer, fridge, kettle and ipod docking station. Fresh, light meals are served in the main dining room.

A wide variety of activities can be done on and around Solio. Game drives, game walks and horse riding are all available on the ranch, which is home to over 70 black and 150 white rhino, as well as buffalo, zebra, giraffe, eland, oryx, warthog, lion, leopard and cheetah. There is also an abundance of birdlife, especially along the Moyo River, which traverses the entire ranch. Children’s activities include learning bush skills and tracking animals. External activities, for a surcharge, include trout fishing in the Aberdare National Park and helicopter flights to Mt Kenya. Solio supports projects in community, environment and wildlife conservation, and holds Ecotourism Kenya’s prestigious gold award.
