About Mukutan Retreat

Ol ari Nyiro, meaning place of springs, is a 100,000-acre private wildlife sanctuary on the western edge of the Laikipia plateau. The sanctuary was initiated by Kuki Gallmann, author of I dreamed of Africa and African Nights. The Gallmann Memorial Foundation is dedicated to creative, sustainable conservation: people and wildlife developing together, through research, education and the arts. Mukutan, meaning meeting, takes its name from the hills that meet here.

Mukutan Retreat overlooks the spectacular Mukutan Gorge, which plunges from 2100 to 900 meters. The retreat comprises 3 individually designed traditional cottages. The cottages, built in African style using local stone, wood and thatch, each have an en-suite double room, fireplace and veranda. The central lounge and dining area is elegantly furnished with antiques and African artefacts. The infinity swimming pool overlooks the valley. Mukutan Retreat can be taken as an exclusive self-catering villa.

The sanctuary has waterfalls, thermal hot springs and a diverse selection of wildlife, including over 400 species of birds and some endemic flora, previously unrecorded. Activities include game drives, game walks and cultural visits to local Pokot villages. Guests are welcome to visit the conservation projects. Current projects include providing community health facilities, building schools and bursaries. Volunteers who wish to assist with projects should apply through the website.
