On the Ewaso Nyiro River, El Karama Lodge looks out on a saltlick that attracts plentiful game. The lodge, owner-managed by the Grant family since the 1970s, is in 15,000 acres of private land. It was refurbished in 2010.
The 4 en-suite tented bandas, of stone, thatch and canvas, have rock bathrooms and verandas. The rondavel has double and twin beds and adjoining bathroom. The family house has a double room, twin room, 2 raised single rooms, bathroom and veranda. The 2 river cottages have en-suite double room, dressing room and veranda. The river cottages share a kitchen, living and dining room, and campfire, and can be taken as a self-catering entity.
The eco-swimming pool is surrounded by spacious terrace, open-sided lounge, and living room with bar and fireplace. The dining room, with sofas and fireplace, is on the riverside. The Safari Spa offers massage and treatments.
Activities include day and night game drives, walking activities including wildlife monitoring, river fishing, horse riding and children’s tracking adventures. Guests can visit the ranch to see the Saihiwal cattle and attend milking, dipping and inspections. El Karama Lodge is committed to the preservation of wildlife habitats and holds Ecotourism Kenya’s silver award.
