Borana Lodge, at the heart of Borana Conservancy, has panoramic views of Mt Kenya, across the Lewa Plains to the Ngare Ndare Forest. Built in 1992 by local artisans using only local building materials, this luxurious lodge is totally in keeping with its surroundings. All guest rooms at the lodge overlook a dam which attracts a wide variety of wildlife to the area.
Borana Lodge has 8 spacious cottages: 4 double and 4 twin. Each cottage is secluded from its neighbour and has its own private veranda and view. Haute cuisine meals are served in a central dining area with large fireplace adorned with local artists’ and sculptors’ work, or as romantic private meals in secluded locations.
The wealth of activities includes game drives, guided bush walks, rhino tracking on foot, horse riding, mountain biking, and joining the Borana Conservancy antipoaching team. Visits to Ngare Ndare Forest, local schools and nearby Maasai villages are also on offer
A stay at Borana Lodge acts as a direct contribution to a wide variety of conservation efforts. All retained earnings from Borana Lodge are invested into community projects which include a mobile clinic, an education support programme which benefits 6 local primary schools and 2 local secondary schools and sponsors a number of students through tertiary education along with a community-focused livestock-to-market programme which benefits over 540 community members. In 2020, Borana Lodge was awarded the prestigious Global Ecosphere Retreat status, recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, one of only ten properties in the world to achieve this.
