Basecamp is a luxury, eco-friendly camp that aims to have negative impact on the environment. Basecamp Foundation supports and cooperates with local communities, as well as developing and promoting Basecamp’s sustainable tourism concept.
The camp has 12 en-suite tents, including 1 family tent. The spacious tents are furnished with heavy wooden furniture and adorned with natural fabrics and local beadwork. Their bathrooms are alfresco; water is heated by solar power. The tents are shaded by thatched roofs and have verandas with views of the Talek River or lush garden. The open sided restaurant serves international dishes, created from fresh ingredients grown in Basecamp’s garden. The restaurant has a sunset viewing platform, fully stocked bar and a selection of books and games. As well as game drives, game walks and cultural visits to local Maasai villages, Basecamp has a unique selection of activities including beading with Maasai women, visiting Talek primary school and cultural adventures with the Maasai moran. Dorobo Club offers children’s activities.
Basecamp’s eco policies include rain catchment, tree planting, recycling grey water and a complex, efficient compost system. Basecamp was one of the first two camps in Kenya to receive a gold award from Ecotourism Kenya, and has won the WTM First Choice Responsible Tourism Award, SKAL International Ecotourism Award and TIES Ecotourism Innovation Award.
