About Rockside Camp

Formerly a hunters’ camp, Rockside Camp is situated at the foot of a rocky kopje known as Kale 1. The camp is personally hosted by its owners, Mark and Nana Tozer. This striking location offers the option of climbing the kopje, or of admiring it from the luxury of the camp.

There are 15 en-suite bandas and 8 luxury bungalows. All meals are served in the dining room, an attractive open building centring on a large rock that supports the thatched roof. Barbecues, when the weather is clement, are served under the stars. The bar is well stocked with soft drinks, beers, wines and spirits, its speciality being the Rockside Sunset Cocktail. The swimming pool provides a welcome break from the various activities.

The area is a haven for birdlife: 84 species were spotted in a single morning. A climb up the kopje is highly recommended; from the top, there are panoramic views of the dense bush land of the Taru Desert, Sagalla Hills, Taita Hills and, on a clear day, the top of Mt Kilimanjaro. A guided hike up Mt Kasigau, which has unique flora and fauna, will take a full day. The camp minimises its environmental impact by using solar power and composting food waste.
