Jane Barnley has lived in Kenya for over 75 years. Together with her son Richard and daughter Julia, she runs Sirikwa Safaris, welcoming guests into her farmhouse and tailor making their safaris. The Barnleys’ house, with its home cooking and comfortable atmosphere, makes an ideal base from which to explore the highlands.
Guests can stay in the farmhouse, which has 2 double rooms, or pitch their tents in the campsite. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the dining room; dishes are homemade, and include home baked chocolate cake.
Each safari is carefully planned to suit the wishes of the individual. Activities include trekking through the Cherangani Hills and climbing Mt Elgon with guides and porters. Ornithological tours with bird guides cover Saiwa Swamp National Park, Mt Elgon National Park, Cherangani Hills, Kongelai Escarpment and Marich Pass, or go further afield to Lake Turkana or Kakamega Forest. Cultural visits to Kapenguria, the site of Jomo Kenyatta’s trial, to West Pokot villages and to Kitale can be arranged. Guided fishing excursions are on offer; local fish includes brown trout, rainbow trout, tiger perch, nile perch, barbel, tilapia and catfish. Both Kitale Club and Eldoret Club have golf courses and swimming pools. Road transfers from Kitale and Eldoret can be arranged.
