About Castle Forest Lodge

Castle Forest Lodge nestles in a rain and bamboo forest, listed a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its large variety of endemic species such as the lobelias, the senecios and the rock hyrax. On the slopes of Mt Kenya, the lodge is committed to maintaining the fragile ecological balance of this unique natural environment.

The main house, built in 1910 with river stones and wood from the surrounding forest, is said to have been visited by both Queen Elizabeth and President Jomo Kenyatta when they were students. The house has double, single and twin rooms. The cottages have living rooms with fireplaces. The bungalows have 2 double rooms, living rooms with fireplaces and private verandas. There is also a large campsite with bathroom facilities. A self-catering bush hut, 8km north of the lodge, is accessible only by a forest track, on foot or horseback. A resident caretaker cooks, lights the fire, guides walks and cares for the horses.

Activities include trout fishing, horse riding and hiking on the slopes of Mt Kenya. Walkers should always be accompanied by a guide. The little known, adventurous Kamweti route from the lodge to the peak takes 4 – 7 days. Experienced porters and guides can be booked at the lodge.
