About Kichwa Tembo

Kichwa Tembo, meaning head of the elephant in Kiswahili, lies between the Oloololo Escarpment and the Sabaringo River, on a private concession northwest of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The camp is set where riverine forest meets the sweeping plains of the Mara, near where the famous final scene of Out of Africa was filmed.

This luxurious camp was extensively refurbished in 2014. The 40 en-suite tents comprise 12 luxury suites and 28 superior; each spacious suite has a private outdoor deck shaded by dense forest canopy. Both twins and doubles have stone floored bathrooms and are decorated in traditional Maasai colours. Meals can be served outdoors, weather permitting, or in the thatched restaurant. Bush meals are also available. The main lodge has a curio shop, reception, a bar and lounge area, a TV room and WiFi. A palm-fringed swimming pool overlooks the savannah.

Activities include twice daily game drives and interpretative bush walks. For an additional price, hiking the Mara Hippo Trail or the Oloololo Escarpment can be arranged.

Kichwa Tembo supports many conservation and development projects including collaboration with the Mara Conservancy, replanting the Sabaringo Riverbanks and providing logistical support for the antipoaching and animal rescue teams. The Green Team controls invasive alien plants and makes fuel bricks to reduce the use of firewood. The camp holds a silver award from Ecotourism Kenya.
