On the banks of the Mara River, Governors’ Il Moran Camp recreates the atmosphere of the original hunting camps. Tucked into a copse of ancient trees, this exclusive camp is home to a wide variety of butterflies and birds. Nightly visits from elephants and other animals are common. The 10 en-suite luxury tents are furnished with beds hand-carved from specially selected wood from fallen, ancient olive trees and Victorian-style baths, and lit with gas and paraffin lamps. The tents’ extended verandas are spacious enough for private dinners.
Lavish alfresco buffets, with live cooking stations, are served for breakfast and lunch. Candlelit dinners are served in the dining tent, with a view over the Mara River.
Activities include 3 daily game drives as well as game walks. Also available, for an extra charge, are visits to local Maasai villages and balloon safaris. Trips to Mfangano Island in Lake Victoria for fishing, bird watching and boat rides can also be arranged, advance booking recommended. Wishing to reduce the impact of tourism on the ecosystem, Governors’ Il Moran Camp, formerly Paradise Camp, has decreased the number of its tents from 20 to 10. This is probably the only time this has happened in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The camp holds a silver award from Ecotourism Kenya.
