About Governor’s Camp

On the banks of the Mara River in the northwest of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Governors’ Camp looks straight across the plains. This location, where lush riverine forest meets the open plains, attracts a wide variety of game. Created in 1972, the camp has become known for comfort, service and good food.

The 37 en-suite tents are made up of 24 twins, 12 doubles and 1 suite. All the tents retain the authentic safari feeling, are lit with gas and paraffin lamps, and have private verandas with views over the river or the plains. The Justus Suite, set apart from the others, is perfect for honeymoon couples or those requiring a little extra luxury.

Alfresco buffets are served for breakfast and lunch. The 4-course dinner is served in the mess tent. Guests can meet at the campfire or in the bar for sundowners before dinner. A small gallery near the curio shop showcases local art.

Activities include 3 daily game drives. The camp can also arrange game walks, visits to Maasai villages and balloon safaris for an extra charge. Advance booking is recommended for trips by light aircraft to Mfangano Island on Lake Victoria for fishing, bird watching and boat rides. Ecotourism Kenya has given Governors’ Camp a silver award.

Governors’ Private Camp is available for the exclusive use of small private groups. The camp provides individually-tailored mobile safaris, with the added bonus of the backup of the professional and well established infrastructure of Governors’ Camp.

The charming Little Governors’ Camp is set around a waterhole on the opposite side of the river from the other Governors properties, and is reached by boat. Little Governors’ Camp has been awarded Ecotourism Kenya’s prestigious gold award.
