Established in 1984, Shimoni Reef was originally an outpost base for One Earth Safaris, the first company to really explore these waters, diving in the Pemba Channel and investigating the outer reefs. Now Shimoni Reef Lodge gives guests the chance to experience this pristine ocean reserve.
The lodge has 6 Swahili style cottages, 1 self-catering 2-bedroom house and 1 rooftop suite overlooking the Wasini Channel. The garden and swimming pool have views of the Indian Ocean, Wasini Island and Usambari Mountains in Tanzania. The cottages can be booked individually, or the lodge can be taken exclusively. Guests discuss their food preferences with the cooks and design their own menus. A myriad of water sports is on offer, including scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, swimming with dolphins and boat trips to the islands. A traditional dhow is available for private excursions. Yoga retreats take place on occasion.
Shimoni, meaning the place of the caves in Swahili, has much history. The caves were used as a holding pen for slaves before they were shipped to Zanzibar. Rusted chains remain to remind guests of these horrors, but today, a visit to the caves contributes positively to the support of the community. Other trips include exploring the nature trails of the forest reserve and boat trips through Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park, a 39km2 paradise of marine life and aquatic birds.
