About Subira House

Formerly the house of the Liwali, or governor of the fort, Subira House is unique in style. The current owners bought the house in 1991, when it was in a state of disrepair, and restored it to its former elegance using traditional materials and methods. The house is set around a central courtyard framed by unusual arches.

There are 7 en-suite rooms, 2 on the ground floor and the remainder on the 1st and 2nd floors. Each room has a spacious balcony with a selection of books, Lamu table, sofas and views of the old fort and the sea. Karkadeh Restaurant, on the 1st floor balcony, serves fresh, homemade dishes. Subira House grows its own fruit and vegetables, including banana, papaya, custard apple, passion fruit, lime and avocado. Lunch is a selection of soups, pasta, cheeses and salads. Dinner, if required, must be booked by 9.30am, and is a 3-course set menu often including the catch of the day.

Subira House has been given a silver award by Ecotourism Kenya for its eco policies. Food waste is composted, grey water is recycled on the garden and the WCs are of an eco design. Captain Jelani, a boat captain and authorised guide, lives on the ground floor. He is available for boat trips, fishing, tours of the town and other excursions.
