Near the striking Lake Magadi at the southern end of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley lies Shompole Wilderness. This attractive little camp is on the banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River in the shade of giant figs. Johann and Samantha own and manage the camp and home-school their two small daughters there.
There are 4 en-suite tents with traditional safari furniture, verandas overlooking the river and bathrooms with safari showers. There are also 2 safari tents with fans and solar lighting, and a central dining and lounge tent.
Activities are diverse and adventurous. The river offers tubing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and a rope swing from the banks into the water. Day and night game drives often spot bat eared foxes, civets, genets, hyena, elephant, lion, leopard and aardwolf. Visitors can walk with baboons courtesy of the Lalenok Resource Centre, or walk with the Maasai and their cattle. Bird watching here is recommended with over 450 species recorded. Helicopter flights are also on offer, advance booking required. The colours of Lake Magadi are extraordinary, made more so by the huge flocks of flamingos on the white salt water.
The Shompole ecosystem is not a national park and is owned and managed by local Maasai.
