About The Centre Bandas

Ol ari Nyiro, meaning place of springs, is a 100,000-acre private wildlife sanctuary on the western edge of the Laikipia plateau. The sanctuary was initiated by Kuki Gallmann, author of I dreamed of Africa and African Nights. The Gallmann Memorial Foundation is dedicated to creative, sustainable conservation: people and wildlife developing together, through research, education and the arts.

There are 10 bandas, each with twin beds and private veranda; bathrooms have long-drop loos and bucket showers. The bandas can be full board or self-catering, and have a communal area surrounding a campfire. Nearby dorms offer more simple accommodation for 30 people. The bandas and dorms are perfect for large groups, team-building workshops, volunteers and researchers.

Mukutan Gorge, which plunges from 2,100 to 900 meters, slices through the sanctuary. The sanctuary has waterfalls, thermal hot springs and a diverse selection of wildlife including over 400 species of birds and some endemic flora, previously unrecorded. Activities include ethno-botanical walks, tree planting and bird watching. Picnics and sundowners can be arranged, as can cultural visits to local Pokot villages. Yoga and massage are available. Guests are also welcome to visit the conservation projects. Current projects include providing community health facilities, building schools and bursaries.
