Kawamwaki, meaning the hill that has fire, is a sacred space for the Kikuyu who have for generations walked long distances to come here for wood. This lush tea plantation in Tigoni, just outside Nairobi, has a charming farmhouse set in spacious grounds offering horse riding and total immersion in nature. The farm also offers artists, writers and yoga retreats.
The farmhouse, built in 1920, is a comfortable family home filled with books, art and heirlooms. The main house has 5 bedrooms with 8 beds, kitchen, sitting room, dining room and terrace. The annex has 2 bedrooms. The studio has bedroom, bathroom and alley kitchen. The team of staff can also prepare food on request. The 45-acre grounds have landscaped gardens, farm with organic produce, tea plantation, horse stables with paddock, and waterfall and lake surrounded by indigenous forest.
As well as the retreats that take place at specific dates throughout the year, activities here include nature walks, bird watching and horse riding. Educational tours, walks and tree planting are offered through the riparian land along the rivers. Organic tea, vegetables, fruits and herbs from the farm are available for sale. The centre also makes a good place to do nothing, relax and enjoy the views.
