In a wild and remote part of Laikipia, Suyian is an eco-friendly exclusive bush camp. Named for the African Wild Dog, Suyian is next to a natural spring and salt lick and has views of Mt Kenya. Ethno-botanist Anne Powys, author of Wild Flowers of Kenya, was born and raised on Suyian Ranch and is the founder and designer of Suyian.
The 7 thatched bandas were built with little impact on the land using local materials. The clay is formed of soil from termite mounds and sand, and the roofs are thatched with sedge grass from the Uaso Narok river. The open-air bathrooms have safari showers.
The eco-friendly camp focusses on beauty, solitude, adventure and discovery. Activities include game drives, bush walks, forest walks and camel safaris. The Maasai team offer trips to local homesteads, local dancing and learning about Maasai traditions and culture. The camp hosts holistic yoga and wellness retreats intermittently through the year.
Suyian Ranch is a working family-owned cattle ranch. The camp fuses perfectly with its surroundings and offers intimate experiences with nature and vanishing cultures. The emphasis is on learning, conservation and healthy living. The team are committed to the preservation of Laikipia’s flora and indigenous forests.
