Boko Boko was established in 1975 as Porini Restaurant; the cottages were added in 2005. Boko Boko and Porini Restaurant are in lush tropical gardens, filled with baobabs, ferns, bamboo and jackfruit trees. Crocodiles, monkeys, giant Aldabra tortoises and miniature sharks also live here.
There are 5 cottages linked by paths through the gardens. All cottages have double bedroom, dressing room, bathroom and veranda with cushioned seating area, and clay tiled floor, 4-poster bed, wooden furniture, aircon and fan.
Porini Restaurant, open-sided and thatched, has a large menu with Swahili and Creole influences. Dishes include chargrilled Boko Boko fillet, chicken Creole, chicken in tamarind sauce, beans in coconut, banana in tomato sauce, brinjal curry, Swahili prawns and taffy Creole. The seafood platter should be booked in advance. The bar is well stocked, and includes a wine list.
The swimming pool has a thatched shelter and sunbathing deck where meals can be served. The Coffee House has darts and table tennis. A masseuse offers massage, manicure and pedicure. Local artists sell their art at the gallery. The Crab Den, affiliated to Boko Boko, is a multi-level beach bar on Copacabana Beach in Mtwapa, with delicious seafood and great views.
