Mike’s Camp, previously known as Munira Island Camp, is on the beautiful and remote Kiwayu Island. It opened in 1992, and has remained since then in the hands of Mike Kennedy, who still hosts the camp personally. There are 7 en-suite thatched bandas, made up of 6 doubles and 1 family banda. 6 bandas have safari showers and 1 has running water and outside baths. The bandas are built from local materials such as palm fronds, and furnished with simple beach furniture and local fabrics. This eco-camp is powered by wind and solar, and uses water brought by donkey. The central living area is decorated with local flip flop art. Sunset Bar, overlooking the mangroves, serves cold beers and fresh fruit juices. The chef serves fresh seafood, salads, Swahili dishes and organic meats.
The island is an ideal destination for relaxation and also offers a wide selection of activities. Water sports include snorkelling, water-skiing, scuba diving, windsurfing, sand yachting, boogie boarding and kite flying. The camp has a state of the art deep sea fishing boat and 2 motorised sailing dhows; long and short-term excursions are available. Long uninhabited beaches offer private walks and bird watching. There is a 24hr rescue service. The camp is closed during May and June.
