About Sand River Camp
On the banks of the Sand River that runs between Kenya and Tanzania, Sand River Camp echoes the camps of the early days of safari. The camp is in the style of the 1920s, the decade of iconic safari, and its distance from other camps gives it a secluded and exclusive atmosphere. It was extensively refurbished in 2020.
The 16 en-suite tents are made up of 11 doubles, 4 twins and 1 family tent. The tents are gathered into 2 distinct camps – Sand River and Little Sand River – each with its own dining tent and lounge area. All tents are elegantly furnished with 4-poster beds, Persian carpets, antique chests, gas lanterns, crystal candelabras and enticing outdoor deck showers.
Activities include game drives in the Maasai Mara, bush meals and sundowners at scenic spots along the Sand River, cultural visits to Maasai villages, and visits to a local school supported by Life and Land Foundation. Balloon safaris can be arranged.
The camp is part of the Elewana Collection, and has been designed to have as little impact on the environment as possible whilst maximising the benefit to the community. The camp reuses and recycles, buys local produce, employs people from the local communities, and holds Ecotourism Kenya’s silver award.
