About Karen Blixen Coffee Garden

On the original estate of the Swedo African Coffee Company, the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden is a lush, manicured garden with a history stretching back to the early days of last century. The Swedo House, built in about 1908, was the farm manager’s house for the Blixen Coffee Plantation, owned by Bror Blixen and his wife Karen Blixen of Out of Africa fame. The Grogan / McMillan Manor House was built in 1905 by Ewart Grogan, famed for walking from Cape to Cairo to win a lady’s hand, and sold in 1910 to Northrup McMillan whose wife built the first library in Kenya. Both houses have been fully restored, and are adorned with photos of early settlers. The 16 en-suite rooms are in cottages with fireplaces and verandas overlooking the gardens. A gym and spa are also on site.

Meals can be served alfresco in the gardens, on the veranda or by the pool. For those who prefer to eat indoors, there are the Lion’s Den Bistro Restaurant and the Sports Bar. More formal events can be arranged in the Swedo House or the Grogan / McMillan House. The Grand Sultan Marquee Tent is ideal for weddings, functions or fund raising events.
