About Distant Relatives Backpackers and Ecolodge

This eco-friendly and hospitable lodge opened in 2012. A short walk from Kilifi Creek and its own private beach, the lodge promotes socially conscious living, environmentally friendly practices, adventure and parties.

The wide range of accommodation comprises 11 en-suite bandas, 4 private rooms, 5 safari tents, 2 dormitories and a campsite. The gardens are dotted with outdoor bamboo showers, shaded hammocks and cushioned hideaways. The restaurant serves tasty pub food, local specialities, vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood and pizzas straight from the wood-fired oven. The pool is surrounded by a sunbathing deck with sunbeds. The spacious lounge has games, cushions, book exchange, Wifi and a fully stocked bar. The communal kitchen is available for those who want to cook for themselves. Activities include water sports, dhow cruises, dive courses, permaculture courses, beach volleyball, movie nights and yoga; the epic, three-day New Years’ Eve parties are the stuff of legend. Safaris to other parts of Kenya can be arranged.

Built using sustainable traditional methods, Distant Relatives recycles and utilises bottles, trees, old coral and sufi cotton in innovative and artistic ways. The eco-lodge grows its own vegetables, uses permaculture and composting, and hosts a menagerie of animals including ducks, chickens, monkeys, guinea fowl and dogs.
