Loyangalani, the town that stands between the bleak desert of northern Kenya and bright blue Lake Turkana, is an extraordinary and exciting site; it attracts intrepid adventurers and those who want to see a part of Kenya little visited. The town makes an ideal starting place for trips across the Chalbi Desert and for excursions to the prehistoric sites of Koobi Fora in Sibiloi National Park.
Palm Shade Camp offers budget accommodation and a selection of activities and facilities. There are 12 rooms, made up of 11 doubles and 1 single. There are also some traditional mud-and-thatch huts and a campsite. The restaurant serves predominantly local food, with a few international dishes. Food is prepared to the guests’ requirement. The conference hall seats 50 pax. Car hire can be arranged. Local sites of interest include the rock art paintings and the remote El Molo village. Activities include climbing Mt Kulal, where thick rainforest is home to monkeys, baboons and colobus. Boat trips and fishing trips on the lake can be arranged.
Loyangalani is the meeting place for the Turkana, Rendille, Samburu and Gabbra tribes. The opportunities for expanding cultural knowledge are endless, and the street markets are filled with artefacts, tools and traditional jewellery from all the tribal groups.
