In the foothills of the sacred O’lolokwe Mountain, Sabache Camp has lovely views of the Matthews Ranges. Sabache, meaning a place of beauty and reverence, offers a wilderness experience in a remote and pristine location. The camp is community owned and operated and benefits the Samburu people and local wildlife.
The 8 en-suite safari tents are adorned with hand-crafted log furniture and natural stonework, and have stone verandas with views of the mountains. The Elephant Walk Restaurant, in partnership with the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, offers delicacies including French pastries, Italian specialities, Indian curries and a selection of local dishes. The community garden supplies organic fruits, vegetables and herbs, free-range chickens and eggs, and local organic dairy products. The Flying Rhino Pub offers drinks including cocktails. The camp has a natural rock pool overlooking a waterhole.
Activities include guided game drives, night drives, medicinal plant walks, bird watching, mountain climbing, camel safaris and visits to cultural villages. Nearby attractions include the Samburu Singing Wells, ancient cycad forests, ceremonial caves and three national parks. The camp is a pioneer in sustainable community-based ecotourism; it operates on solar power, provides local employment and supports local projects including providing clean water, health care, education and micro-finance programmes.
