Shaba National Reserve, where Joy Adamson spent her final years reintegrating a lion into the wild, is the untamed wilderness surrounding Sarova Shaba Game Lodge. Resident species in this arid northern reserve include Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and Beisa oryx. Of the 350 species of birds found here, 5 are endemic to this area.
The lodge has 80 en-suite bedrooms on 2 floors, made up of 45 twins, 20 doubles and 15 triples. All rooms are thatched and look out over the river. There is also a presidential suite, with lounge and private Jacuzzi, and 4 executive suites with private lounge. The ground floor rooms are designed for guests with disabilities. The split-level Surpelei Restaurant overlooks the freeform pool and Ewaso Nyiro River. The restaurant serves buffet breakfast and lunch. Dinner is table d’hote with Mongolian and active cooking on alternate days. There is a lounge bar and a poolside bar. Shaba was recently the location for the popular TV show Survivor Africa and the lodge now has a Sarova Shaba Survivor Challenge. The animation team is ready to assist with teambuilding activities. The conference facilities are equipped with modern audio visual equipment. A crocodile viewing platform extends over the river. Samburu, Borana and Turkana dancers perform every night. Sarova Hotels has a loyalty programme called Zawadi. Shaba Game Lodge has a bronze award from Ecotourism Society of Kenya.
