The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is best known for its work protecting elephants, and has a successful elephant orphanage in Nairobi and an elephant rehabilitation operation in Tsavo. It’s also a vital protector of the Tsavo area where it has anti-poaching units, dog units, aerial surveillance, mobile veterinary units, de-snaring and elephant stockades. By staying at their camps, visitors contribute directly to these and more projects. Activities include simply relaxing in a beautiful location, going on game drives and visiting the elephants at the rehabilitation projects. The camps are eco-friendly, self-catering, and can only be taken on an exclusive basis; each has a team of staff including a chef.
Umani Springs, in Kibwezi Forest, has a selection of dining and lounge spaces, 5 bedrooms in 3 cottages, a spacious kitchen and an alluring swimming pool. The forest is a delight for botanists, birdwatchers, entomologists and elephant-lovers
Ithumba Camp has 4 tents with adjoining outdoor bathrooms. Visits to the elephant orphans during their mud baths are a highlight of a stay here.
SWT’s newest camp, Ithumba Hill Camp, has 4 spacious tents on raised platforms complete with Lamu doors. The camp has a thatched dining area, spacious pool terrace and wonderful views.
