In the late 19th century, explorers such as Speke and Burton trekked
through treacherous and unmapped lands in search of the source of
the Nile, and finally settled on Lake Victoria. The traditional villages and
bright fishing boats on the lake have changed little since this time. On a
secluded bay in Mfangano Island, Mfangano Island Camp is an ideal spot
from which to view this lake with such a colourful history.
The 6 thatched en-suite rondavels are made up of 4 doubles and 2 twins,
all with verandas overlooking the lake.
From the open sitting room and dining room, guests can watch dhows
traversing the water, cormorants diving for fish and fish eagles perching on
the treetops. Fresh salads, the daily catch and homemade bread are served.
The wide variety of birdlife includes the black headed gonolek and the
double toothed barbet. Birdwatchers can walk through the lush vegetation
of the hills, stroll along the shore or take a trip in a boat.
Other activities include fishing, waterskiing and visiting local Luo villages.
Sipping sundowners in a traditional longboat while watching
the sun set over the lake makes a perfect end to the day. The camp is
closed in April and May.
