Perched high on a bluff, Lion’s Bluff appears suspended over Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary. Describing itself as the view with a lodge, Lion’s Bluff has stunning views to North and South Pare Mountains, Taita Hills and, on a clear day, Mt Kilimanjaro. Lion’s Bluff was conceived and built by the local Taita community; every visitor directly benefits the community and ensures the preservation of the sanctuary. There are 12 en-suite bandas, traditionally built of sustainable timber, canvas and coconut thatch. The bandas are linked by timber bridges, and each has a handmade 4-poster bed, mosquito net and balcony with a panoramic view. Fruit and vegetables come from local farmers, many of whom are shareholders in the sanctuary.
Activities are tailor-made to the wishes of the guests, and include day and night game drives. Battlefield tours of World War I sites are recommended. Ornithological walks are remarkable: 600 species of bird have been recorded here. The nature trail provides exciting adventures for children. Cheetah campsite, with kitchen and bathroom facilities, is affiliated to Lion’s Bluff; guests camping here can use the facilities and activities of Lion’s Bluff. The Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary is made up of 3 group ranches, Lualenyi, Mramba and Oza, which have united to preserve this vital wildlife corridor.
