On the southern banks of the Galana River, Galdessa Camp sits in a cluster of doum palms overlooking the Yatta Plateau, the world’s oldest and longest fossilised lava flow. The camp is owned by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust; a highlight of a stay here is visiting the Sheldrick’s orphan elephant reintegration project.
There are 5 spacious en-suite tents on raised wooden platforms, with white canvas walls, thatched roofs and large veranda, surrounded by foliage. The dining room and lounge, in natural wood and earthy colours, overlook the river.
Nearby sister camp, Galdessa Little, has 3 luxury en-suite tents, raised on wooden platforms. Both camps are takenexclusively, on a self-catering basis, giving guests the freedom to plan days and meals as and when they wish. A team of staff, including a chef, tends each camp. Activities include game drives, bush breakfasts and sundowners at viewpoints.
Both camps have been built with as little impact on the environment as possible. They recycle waste, use solar power and have a water treatment plant. Visits here directly contribute to the protection and conservation of the surrounding areas, and to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s projects including building and maintaining fences, supporting anti-poaching units, building dams and boreholes, and providing aerial surveillance.
