Yogi | Charisse Louw

Charisse is an eternal student and has been a yoga teacher for 25 years. She studied in several Indian ashrams, including those of Sivananda, Amma, Ramana Maharshi, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Iyengar and Sri Aurobindo. She deeply respects all schools of yoga and honours her current daily practice of vinyasa and yin yoga, as well as Bhakti yoga every moment.

She fell deeply in love with Qi Gong in 2018 and went on to qualify with the International Health Qi Gong Federation and studied in China. She is a member of a Zen sangha in Cape Town, has practiced Vipassana, meditates and joins puja with a Tibetan Buddhist sangha regularly and embraces all forms of meditation - seated & moving, formal & intuitive, ancient & newborn in this moment.

Qi gong is a gentle moving meditation that is part of her daily practice, as is walking meditation in the mountains and on the beaches of her beautiful home in Noordhoek. She dances regularly and passionately with a Dance Awake group and has relished Movement Medicine, 5 Rhythms as well as a fun past in conventional dance forms. She is a lifelong scribbler and part of a fab writer’s group and you can find her on social media @goflow42

Over the last five years Charisse has facilitated numerous retreats and workshops all over South Africa - at Temenos, Blue Butterfly, Hearth and Soul, The Buddhist Retreat Centre, Yoga Connection, The Center and Bodhi Khaya, to name a few - while lecturing in the Visual Studies division of the Art Department at the University of Stellenbosch and raising her lovely children.

She has a weekly Qi Gong circle in Noordhoek and collaborates at Shanti Festivals and the Greenpop Reforest Fest.

She was most recently on retreat at Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu and trekked the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal.

She would prefer to say nothing at all of herself, as Lao Tzu said in the Tao Te Ching, ‘Just remain in the centre; watching. And then forget that you are there’. She is delighted to facilitate her first retreat in Kenya and hopes that this introduction serves as an invitation to join her in some of the life affirming practices that have helped kindled her inner smile.
