About Island Camp, Baringo

Island Camp was established in 1975, making it one of the original tented camps in Kenya. The camp, on Ol Kokwe Island in Lake Baringo, offers both relaxation and activities; the area is particularly known for its prolific birdlife. The island is owned by the Njemps tribe, and a percentage of the camp’s income goes to the local community.

There are 23 en-suite tents, made up of twins, doubles and triples. The tents are shaded by thatched roofs, and have verandas with views of the lake. The secluded honeymoon suite is more spacious. The swimming pool is surrounded by a sunbathing terrace. The open sided restaurant serves international cuisine and local specialities. Twice a week, barbecue dinner is served at the poolside. The main bar and pool bar have extensive drink lists. Cultural walks across the island give visitors the chance to meet the local community, visit the school and learn about the Njemps’ traditions. Lakeshore cruises, including champagne breakfast on a secluded beach, view the lake’s inhabitants, such as hippos, crocodiles and fish eagles. Ol Kokwe island cruises visit a Njemps village and nearby hot springs. Bird walks and sundowners are also available. Water sports include water skiing, ski bob, paddle boards and knee boards.
